Qn.: What is the objective of the Yuru Musical Instrument Hackathon India 2023?
Ans: The objective of the Yuru Musical Instrument Hackathon is to encourage Innovators to come up with potential ideas and create prototypes of casual musical instruments that can be played by anyone without prior knowledge and training in music. Participants are expected to create Musical instruments using Sony’s robotic toys toio TM and MESH TM as well as IoT board computer Spresense TM along with other 3 rd party electronic components,modules, boards, sensors, actuators etc.
Qn.: What is the eligibility to participate in the Yuru Musical Instrument Hackathon India 2023?
Ans: Any Indian citizen aged above 18 years is eligible to participate in the Yuru Musical Instrument Hackathon.
Qn.: What is the team size allowed to participate?
Ans: The team consists of minimum 2 and maximum 4 persons.
Qn.: Is there any age limit for the participants?
Ans: Yes, the participant should be aged above 18 years on the day of registration.
Qn.: Is there any fee to be paid for registration?
Ans: No, there is no registration fee.
Qn.: Who can participate in the Yuru Musical Instrument Hackathon?
Ans: Indian citizens with sufficient technology know-how and enthusiasm in music.
Qn.: Can non-technical people participate in the event?
Ans: Yes, however the other member(s) in the team should have necessary
HW design know-how and SW programming skills.
Qn.: I am not a trained musician, but a music enthusiast, Am I be eligible to participate?
Ans: Yes, you are eligible to participate. Yuru Musical Instrument Hackathon does not
mandate any prior experience or expertise in music.
Qn.: Can I participate as an individual without a team?
Ans: Not allowed. As per the event guidelines, team must have minimum 2 and maximum 4
members to register for the event.
Qn.: How is the Ideathon conducted?
Ans: Ideathon consists of 2 steps:
1. [Idea Submission & Evaluation]: Participants will submit Product Ideas for developing
“musical instrument” in the stipulated template. An expert panel of Yuru Musical
Instrument Hackathon will evaluate the ideas offline. The best 25 ideas will be selected
for the “Idea Pitch Session”
2. [Idea Pitch Session]: Teams shortlisted from Idea Evaluation will present the Product Idea
to Jury in online evaluation. The best 10 ideas will be selected for the “Hackathon –
Prototype Development”.
Qn.: How is the Hackathon conducted?
Ans: In the Hackathon, the teams selected from the “Ideathon - Idea Pitch Session” will develop a
physical prototype of the proposed musical instrument, demonstrate the usage, and perform
live music using the instrument on stage for final judgement.
Qn.: Do we have to buy Sony devices toio TM , MESH TM , Spresense TM to be used for the development of Yuru Musical Instrument? Ans: No, you do not have to buy these devices. Sony will provide 1 unit of these devices to Teams shortlisted for the Yuru Musical Instrument Hackathon.
Qn.:Can we retain and continue to use the HW devices (Spresense TM , toio TM and
MESH TM ) provided by Sony after the Yuru Musical Instrument Hackathon?
Ans: No, the participants must submit all HW devices and gadgets provided by Sony to
the Yuru Musical Instrument Hackathon Committee after the final demo and
performance on the Hackathon Day.
Qn.: Can we use 3 rd party HW modules/components/boards (ex: Arduino board) to
develop the Yuru Musical Instrument?
Ans: Yes, the Participants can use 3 rd party HW modules/components/boards along with
the 3 devices provided by Sony. However, the cost of such 3 rd party components
must be borne by the Participants.
Qn.: Do we need to sign any legal agreement with Sony to participate?
Ans: Yes, you will need to sign a EULA (End User License Agreement) with Sony if your Idea gets selected from the Ideathon for creating the prototype of the Musical Instrument in the Hackathon. Upon signing the EULA, each team will be given 1 unit of Sony devices Spresense TM , toio TM and MESH TM for prototype development.
As per the agreement, the team shall be fully responsible for the following:
- Use the Sony devices/gadgets only for developing the prototype and not for
any commercial purpose
- Upkeep and safety of the Sony devices/gadgets
- Submit Sony devices/gadgets to Yuru Musical Instrument Hackathon Team
on the final day of the Hackathon.
Qn.: When will the list of teams selected for developing the physical prototype of the
Musical Instrument be announced?
Ans: The top 10 teams selected from the Ideathon will be announced in the 1 st week of Feb 2023.
Qn.: How do I receive communications / messages / updates from Sony after registration?
Ans: You will receive all communications to the email id of the team lead mentioned in the
registration form.
Qn.: Can I submit Product Idea in my own format?
Ans: No, Idea submission in custom format not allowed. It is mandatory to use the Template
provided @ https://www.sonyindiasoftware.co.in/events.html to prepare and submit the
Product Ideas to Yuru Musical Instrument Hackathon.
Qn.: What if the email-ID mentioned in the Registration Form is different from the email-ID in Idea
Sheet?
Ans: Email-ID of the Team Lead is a common-key to map the Idea Sheet to a specific registration.
Therefore, you must ensure that same Email-ID has been mentioned in Registration Form
and Idea Sheet.
Qn.: Who are the Jury members?
Ans: Jury comprises the experts from Sony, IIT Madras and eminent musicians.
Qn.: When will the Winners of the Yuru Musical Instrument Hackathon be announced?
Ans: Results will be announced on 12 th March 2023.
Qn.: What technology and devices can be used for developing “Musical Instrument”?
Ans: Sony group companies will provide devices like, MESH™, toio™, SPRESENSE™, etc. to the
teams shortlisted for the Hackathon. Teams can bring other HW components and modules as
necessary to be integrated into the prototype.
Qn.: Why should I participate in Yuru Musical Instrument Hackathon India 2023?
Ans: Yuru Musical Instrument Hackathon India 2023 provides a unique opportunity to the
participants to get familiar with some of the cool gadgets and devices from Sony such
MESH™, toio™ and SPRESENSE™ to create musical instruments for fun and passion. You
will also be recognized with certificates and cash prizes if adjudged the Winner. The
Hackathon also offers an avenue to connect with innovators and experts from the
Industry/Academia. Last but not the least, the best Innovators identified from the Hackathon
will be considered for internship or employment with Sony.
Qn.: Are there any awards or certificates?
Ans: Yes, the Winner and 2 Runners-Up of the Yuru Musical Instrument Hackathon will be
awarded with Cash Prizes worth 50 thousand INR and 25 thousand INR respectively
along with certificates. Members of the 10 teams qualified for the Hackathon final
round will be recognized with certificates of participation.
Qn.: When will the Award Ceremony be held?
Ans:The Award Ceremony will be held as part of the Grand Finale of the Yuru Musical
Instrument Hackathon on 12 th March 2023.
Qn.: Can the Participant own the Product Idea, HW/SW design, and source code of the
Musical Instrument created for the Yuru Musical Instrument Hackathon?
Ans: No, the Participants must agree to contribute the Product Idea, HW/SW design, and
source code of the Musical Instrument created for the Yuru Musical Instrument
Hackathon to Open Source.
Qn.: Will there be any job opportunity in Sony for the Winners?
Ans: Primary objective of the Yuru Musical Instrument Hackathon is to encourage music lovers and
innovators to create musical instruments leveraging Sony’s EdTech toys and IoT devices.
However, the Innovators who showcase outstanding technical skills and are adequately
qualified may be considered for internship or job opportunities.
